The Day He Let Me Die for His Secretary

Chapter 7

1,840 words

The moment he arrived at the company, his assistant came running toward him, drenched in sweat.

“Have you contacted Mr. Parsons yet? What’s happening? Why did they suddenly withdraw the investment?”

Eric rattled off questions before even stepping through the doors.

The assistant wiped the sweat from his brow and replied breathlessly, “Mr. Trevor, we’ve been trying to contact them, but no one from the firm is answering. All they said was—they’re pulling the plug.”

“We did a quick check… It turns out they actually started withdrawing a week ago. We didn’t even notice until they officially notified us.”

“There’s no way to stop it now,” the assistant added, face pale, voice tense.

It felt like the sky was collapsing.

That investment firm had been the first to lend a hand when the company was at its lowest.

There had been no major incidents recently—nothing that could’ve triggered this.

Why now?

Why so suddenly?

No matter how hard he tried to make sense of it, Eric couldn’t find an answer.

In desperation, he clung to his last hope.

He dialed Mr. Parsons’ number.

To his surprise, the call connected almost instantly.

It was as if Mr. Parsons had been waiting.

There was a beat of hesitation before Eric finally asked, voice tight.

“Mr. Parsons… what happened to the investment? Everything was going so well between our companies. Why are you pulling out now—so suddenly?”

On the other end of the line, Mr. Parsons chuckled coldly.

“Mr. Trevor, do you know that when it comes to companies teetering on the edge of collapse like yours, our firm typically considers a takeover, not an investment?”

“The only reason we invested in the first place was because our CEO—Ms. Cruz—personally ordered it.”

“Now that CEO Cruz has divorced you, there’s no longer any reason for us to continue investing in your company.”
