My Sons Took Their Father's Name—and Lost Mine

Chapter 1

The morning after my father died, my twenty-two-year-old son, Owen Whitmore, and his eighteen-year-old brother, Jack, approached me at the funeral home.

"Mom, we want to change our last name to Mercer's," Owen said. "Dad's name."

Their grandfather's memorial portrait was ten feet away.

They said their father, Daniel Mercer, had spent twenty years being humiliated by the wealthy Whitmore family. He had eaten last at family dinners, stayed out of important decisions, and watched our annual remembrance ceremonies from the hallway.

"We're grown men," Owen declared. "We shouldn't have to carry your father's name."

My father had built the Whitmore manufacturing business from nothing. He'd paid for Owen's elite education and set aside money for Jack's college. When I looked toward my husband, he turned his face away.

"Have you thought this through?" I asked.

"For years," Owen replied.

I understood then. They hadn't come to comfort me. They'd waited until my father was buried to challenge the one promise Daniel had made when he joined our family.

"Fine," I said. "But your father needs to tell me himself."
