My Husband Whispered About His Pregnant Mistress in His Sleep, So I Destroyed Him While He Was Awake
Chapter 1
“My sweet boy. Papà will buy you and your mamma a house of your own.”
It was three in the morning when those words slipped from my husband’s lips.
My eyes snapped open.
For six years, I had been married to Brian O’Hara, heir to one of New York’s most powerful crime families. We had never had a child. More importantly, I wasn’t pregnant.
So whose son was he talking about?
I reached over and shook him awake.
“What did you just say?”
Brian stirred, barely opening his eyes.
“What?”
“You were talking about buying a house. For a woman and her baby.”
His expression shifted for the briefest second before he rubbed a hand over his face.
“Just a nightmare,” he muttered. “One of the Family’s associates has been hounding me over money. Must’ve gotten into my head.”
Then he rolled onto his side and closed his eyes again.
I didn’t press him.
Brian had always been a good liar. Asking twice would only warn him that I was suspicious.
So I waited until his breathing evened out before reaching for my phone.
Months ago, Brian had given me access to one of the accounts he used for household expenses and personal transfers. I opened it now and began scrolling through the transaction history.
A payment from three months earlier stopped me cold.
$50,000.
The memo read: **Down payment.**
The recipient was Vanessa Russo.
I knew the name.
Vanessa worked for one of the businesses controlled by the O’Hara family. Brian had mentioned her before, always casually, always as if she were too insignificant for me to remember.
I searched her name online.
Her account appeared almost immediately.
The first post on her page was an ultrasound photo.
[Our little angel is three months old now. Daddy says once you’re born, we’ll finally have a home of our own.]
The post had gone up one day after Brian transferred her fifty thousand dollars.
My grip tightened around the phone.
Three months pregnant.
A fifty-thousand-dollar down payment.
And Brian dreaming about buying a home for his son and the boy’s mother.
There were coincidences.
This wasn’t one of them.
I took screenshots of the transfer and the post, then sent everything to my father, head of the Moretti family.
[Dad, the perfect son-in-law you chose didn’t just betray our marriage.]
I looked at Brian.
He was still asleep beside me, peaceful and completely unaware that six years of marriage had just ended in my mind.
My fingers moved across the screen again.
[He got another woman pregnant.]
A few seconds passed before I sent one final message.
[Don’t contact the O’Haras yet.]
[By the time Brian realizes I know, I want every dollar, every property, and every agreement tied to this marriage accounted for.]
I set my phone down and looked at my husband one last time.
Brian O’Hara had spent six years believing that betraying his wife was a private matter.
He had forgotten one thing.
He hadn’t just married me.
He had married into the Moretti family.
——
His reply came almost instantly.
[That bastard. Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ll have our attorney start reviewing everything tied to your marriage. Brian humiliated my daughter and the Moretti name. He’ll answer for it.]
My stomach twisted as I continued scrolling through Vanessa’s feed.
One month ago:
[We closed on our new place today! It’s beautiful. Thank you, hubby, for giving me and our baby a real home.]
The photo had been taken inside a luxury real estate office. Vanessa stood in a fitted maternity dress with one arm wrapped around Brian’s.
His hand rested at her waist.
But it wasn’t the intimacy that hurt most.
It was the way he looked at her.
Soft. Proud. Almost tender.
I couldn’t remember the last time Brian had looked at me that way.
I kept scrolling.
Two months ago:
[Hubby says he loves me and our baby more than anything. Dinner tonight was perfect!]
The photo showed a table at one of Manhattan’s most exclusive restaurants, with two plates of Kobe beef and a bottle of vintage wine between them.
I remembered that night.
The Morettis had just secured control of an important waterfront route, and I had suggested we celebrate there.
Brian had frowned.
“Claudia, that place is ridiculously overpriced. We don’t need to throw money away just to celebrate.”
So we had stayed home.
Apparently, the restaurant hadn’t been too expensive for Vanessa.
Three months ago:
[Two red lines! Baby, you came at the perfect time. Daddy and Mommy can’t wait to meet you!]
The picture showed Vanessa and Brian’s hands intertwined over the positive pregnancy test.
That was enough.
I locked the screen and pressed my face into the pillow, biting down hard to keep myself from making a sound.
Six years.
Six years of marriage, and while I had been protecting our families’ alliance, standing beside Brian at every dinner, negotiation, and funeral, he had been building another life behind my back.
Beside me, Brian slept peacefully, a faint smile on his lips.
Maybe he was dreaming about Vanessa.
Maybe he was dreaming about their child and the home he had already bought for them.
I stared at his sleeping face until the ache in my chest slowly hardened into something colder.
Brian O’Hara had made his choice.
Now I would make mine.
I slipped quietly out of bed and went downstairs to my home office.
Before deciding exactly how to end this marriage, I needed to know who Vanessa Russo really was.
One call to a Moretti investigator was enough.
By sunrise, a preliminary file was waiting in my encrypted inbox.
Vanessa Russo, twenty-three years old.
She had graduated from a small college and currently worked as a receptionist at one of the O’Hara family’s legitimate businesses. Her parents had no known connections to any of New York’s major Families.
Nothing in her background stood out.
Except for one detail.
On social media, she had recently begun calling herself Vanessa O’Hara.
There was no marriage license.
No legal name change.
She had simply taken my husband’s name and started using it as though it already belonged to her.
I continued reading.
Vanessa had joined the company six months after Brian and I married.
There was no possibility that she hadn’t known who I was.
Everyone working under the O’Hara name knew Brian was married to Claudia Moretti. Our marriage wasn’t merely personal. It was part of the alliance between two Families.
But Vanessa wasn’t the one who had stood before both families and sworn vows to me.
Brian had.
I closed the file.
