My Fiancé Bet Me Away, So I Married His Best Friend

Chapter 1

The third time Spencer lost a bet to Brooke, he looked over at me with a grin.

“Same deal as last time.”

I already knew what that meant.

Brooke laughed. “Three days. You have to date someone else for three days.”

Spencer leaned closer.

“Come on, Meg. Don’t chicken out again.”

I almost laughed.

He was the one who’d lost the bet, but somehow I was always the one who had to pay for it.

The first two times, I’d gotten upset and left. Spencer knew I’d never actually date someone else, which was probably why he thought the whole thing was so funny.

This time, I didn’t leave.

I looked at him. “You’re sure?”

Before Spencer could answer, Brooke jumped in.

“Obviously. That’s the bet.”

“Okay.”

I got up and walked over to Colin McAllister, who was sitting off to the side with a drink, mostly staying out of everyone’s nonsense.

I sat down next to him and looked back at Spencer.

“I pick Colin.”

The room went quiet fast.

Spencer’s smile dropped.

Brooke looked between us. “Wait, seriously?”

I hooked my arm through Colin’s.

“You said another guy. Colin’s another guy.”

Spencer stared at me.

“Meg, come on.”

“What?”

“You know I was joking.”

“Really? Because two minutes ago you were telling me not to chicken out.”

Brooke let out an awkward laugh.

“Okay, but Colin’s different.”

“How?”

She glanced at Spencer.

“He’s his friend.”

I shrugged. “Nobody said friends were off-limits.”

Spencer got up and came over.

“That’s enough. Come sit back down.”

He reached for my arm, but Colin casually stopped him.

Spencer looked at him.

“What are you doing?”

Colin raised an eyebrow. “Pretty sure she already picked.”

“Don’t start.”

“I’m not the one who made the bet.”

Spencer’s jaw tightened.

“Megan’s just pissed off.”

I looked at him. “No, I’m literally doing what you told me to do.”

Brooke stepped closer.

“Meg, seriously, you and Spencer are getting married next week. You can’t actually date one of his friends right before the wedding.”

Spencer nodded.

“Exactly. This is getting ridiculous.”

That almost made me smile.

It was only ridiculous now that I’d said yes.

Spencer lowered his voice.

“Come on. Just come back over here.”

“No.”

“Megan.”

“What?”

“Stop making this into a whole thing.”

I’d heard that before.

Two weeks earlier, Brooke had practically taken over our wedding planning.

She changed the flowers, rearranged the reception setup, and kept making decisions with Spencer without even asking me.

When I finally said something, Spencer barely looked up from his phone.

“Brooke’s just helping. Don’t make it weird.”

So I’d stopped arguing.

At some point, Brooke became more involved in my wedding than I was.

Spencer crouched beside me.

“We’re getting married in a week. Can you please not do this in front of everyone?”

I looked at him.

“You’re embarrassed?”

“Obviously.”

“Interesting.”

He frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.”

I pulled my arm away from Colin and stood up.

Spencer visibly relaxed, probably thinking I was finally giving in.

Instead, I grabbed my purse.

“If me actually going along with your stupid bet is this big of a problem, maybe we should just put the wedding on hold.”

His expression changed immediately.

“What?”

I met his eyes.

“Maybe we shouldn’t get married next week.”
