Escaping The Husband Who Stole My Real Biological Baby

Chapter 2

5,722 words

"Our baby didn't make it, Zoe," Arthur whispered. His voice broke perfectly. He took a slow, deliberate step toward me, his hands raised in a gesture of pure surrender. "She was stillborn."

I stared at him, my back pressed hard against the mahogany bookshelf. "Stillborn?"

"The umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck," he said. Tears welled in his dark eyes. He looked like a shattered, grieving father. "You were unconscious from the hemorrhage. The doctors said you might not survive the grief. I couldn't lose you too."

"So you just swapped them?" I choked out. "You replaced my dead baby with Serena's?"

"Lily's surrogate gave birth the exact same week," Arthur pleaded. He closed the distance between us and gently gripped my trembling shoulders. "It was a miracle, Zoe. A second chance. I gave you a beautiful, healthy daughter so your heart wouldn't break. I did it to save you."

He pulled me against his solid chest. He stroked my hair with incredible gentleness.

I wanted to believe him. I wanted to sink into his warmth and pretend the nightmare wasn't real.

But a cold, dark seed of doubt had already taken root in my soul.

Hours later, the sun finally set, and the backyard party moved into the formal dining room.

The long mahogany table was covered in ripped wrapping paper and empty plates. Lily sat at the head of the table, wearing a sparkly pink crown.

Her violet eyes danced with pure, innocent joy.

Arthur’s mother, Eleanor, sat right beside her. Eleanor had always looked at me with thinly veiled disdain. She reached for a special, separate cake box she had brought from an elite bakery downtown.

"Here you go, my precious girl," Eleanor cooed. She sliced a thick piece of cake and slid it onto Lily’s porcelain plate. "Your absolute favorite."

I watched Lily pick up her silver fork. She took a massive bite.

"What kind of cake is that?" I asked, my voice suddenly tight.

Eleanor offered me a cold, mocking smile. "Peanut butter fudge."

My blood turned to absolute ice.

"No!" I gasped. I lunged forward, knocking my heavy chair backward. "Lily, spit it out!"

Arthur grabbed my arm, pulling me back with terrifying force. "Zoe, calm down. What is wrong with you?"

"She cannot eat that!" I screamed, struggling against his iron grip. "She will go into anaphylactic shock!"

I have a severe, highly lethal peanut allergy. It is a dominant, highly hereditary genetic trait in my family. If I even touch a peanut, my throat closes completely.

My biological child would have a ninety-nine percent chance of inheriting the exact same deadly allergy. That’s why there was no peanut butter ever in our house.

I waited for Lily to gasp for air. I waited for her small face to turn red.

Lily just blinked at me. She swallowed the cake easily. She licked the sweet peanut butter frosting from her lips. She did not cough. She did not choke. She was perfectly, entirely fine.

I froze. The chaotic noise of the dining room faded into a suffocating, ringing silence.

I looked at Eleanor’s cruel smirk. I looked at Arthur’s clenched jaw.

If my baby had truly been stillborn, and Arthur had made a desperate, last-minute decision to swap them, Eleanor wouldn't be feeding her peanut butter with such malicious certainty… and only now?

Arthur didn't make a split-second choice to save my feelings.

Midnight blanketed the massive house in heavy silence.

Arthur was fast asleep in our bed. His chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm. He looked like a man without a single sin on his conscience.

I slipped out from under the silk sheets. I did not wear slippers. I moved like a ghost down the dark hallway.

I slipped into his study and locked the heavy oak door behind me.

His private laptop sat on the desk.

I opened the lid. The screen glowed bright white in the dark room. A password prompt appeared. I didn't need to guess. I typed in Serena’s birthdate.

The screen unlocked instantly.

My hands shook violently as I opened his private files. I bypassed the family photos and the vacation itineraries. I searched for my own name. I searched for the medical records from six years ago.

I found a hidden folder labeled: The Lily Protocol.

I clicked it. A scanned medical document filled the screen. It was my delivery record. But it was not the sanitized version the hospital had given me. This was the raw, unedited surgical log from the private clinic Arthur owned.

I read the timeline. The air vanished from my lungs.

Lily was not born the same week as my baby. Lily was born via a private surrogate a full month before I went into labor.

But Lily was born dying.

The medical file detailed a fatal, rare bone marrow defect. Serena’s genetics were flawed. Lily was not going to survive her first month on earth without a highly specific, incredibly rare bone marrow and cord blood match.

My eyes darted to the next page. It was my own medical profile.

My blood type. My genetic markers. They were highlighted in bright yellow ink.

I was a perfect, one-in-a-million match for Serena’s dying child.

Tears poured down my face as I read the final surgical log.

Arthur had ordered his elite doctors to induce my labor three weeks early. He had drugged me.

He had forced my body to deliver my beautiful, healthy baby before she was fully ready.

I scrolled down to the extraction report. My heart shattered into a million jagged pieces.

They did not just take the cord blood. They needed the bone marrow immediately. They performed a brutal, invasive extraction on my newborn baby the exact second she took her first breath.

I stared at the final line of the report. The dark ink burned into my retinas.

Donor Infant - Deceased due to extraction complications.
