My Student Who Died in a Car Crash Actually Called Me

I'm an elementary school homeroom teacher. Every year before summer break, I have to remind my students over and over: no swimming on your own, don't go out by yourself. Less than a month into summer break, one of my sweet, well-behaved girl students sent me a video of herself swimming in a backwoods pond. It scared the life out of me. I called her and spent over an hour coaxing and pleading before I finally talked her into going home.
