Confinement Mother-in-Law Fed Me Dishwater; I Fled With Child
From the back cover
It's been over two weeks since I nearly died giving birth. The soup my mother-in-law brings me has nothing floating in it but a few limp leaves of vegetable. My sister-in-law, Christine, gets bird's nest and fish maw. I was so hungry my head was spinning. "Mom, if this keeps up I won't have any milk for the baby." Mrs. Swanson curled her lip. "If you're low on milk, that's your own failing. Don't go blaming the food."
