The day after news of my father's death reached us, the whole village found my mother lying in the same bed as my disabled uncle. Nothing had happened between them, but everyone still cursed my mother as a loose woman who would take any man to bed. Grandmother gave her two choices: die, or marry the uncle. My mother looked at the rat poison on the bedside table, then at me, and clutched my father's photo and cried for half a month. In the end she chose the second one.
